Self-image and peer counseling

I'm Aoi Hashima , an occupational therapist working in Saga Sumai and Fukuoka.

Yesterday we talked about self-efficacy.

"Improving Self-Efficacy"
I'm Aoi Hashima , an occupational therapist working in Saga Sumai and Fukuoka. As recovery after a stroke progresses, many of you must have experienced anxiety and loss of confidence...

Self-efficacy is simply self-confidence, but there is a similar word called self-image.

Self-image is the way you imagine yourself.

This time, I'm going to look at self-image.

what is self image

Self-image is the way you imagine yourself.

Depending on the content of the image, there is a way to think about it separately from positive self-image and negative self-image.

For example, if you have a self-image that says "I can always be healthy," you can say that you have a positive self-image.

If your self-image is "I'm not good at talking to people around you," then you can say your self-image is negative.

In general, when you have a negative self-image, you cannot fully demonstrate your power.

Self-image is created by past experiences, education, environment, etc.

Self-image and peer counseling

When I read books about self-image and research on the internet, I realized that peer counseling has something to do with it.

In the peer counseling course I'm still taking, it includes the work of getting everyone to understand who they are, discover new sides of themselves, and grow on their own.

You can't change your negative self-image all at once, but by talking bit by bit about what you've accumulated inside you, you can achieve a new self.

In peer counseling, there is a task of talking about things that have made you happy recently and new discoveries, so I think it will improve your self-image.

It is said that self-image can be improved by listing your achievements and things that make you happy, so I think that is a method of peer coaching in itself.

Also, in peer counseling it is important to listen to the participants and I believe this will lead to the use of the model.

Modeling is a method of imitating the behavior of an ideal person and changing your own behavior.

By listening to each other's stories in peer counseling, we can get feedback like, "What that guy is doing is great" or "He's out like that, so I might as well try it out." Feelings can rise.

I believe that using this model to change one's behavior leads to new experiences and opportunities to change your self-image.

I changed my image

It has been almost two years since I started studying peer counseling.

In fact, my self-image is not all positive.

However, as I learned about peer counseling, I had more and more opportunities to think, "I'm fine with myself."

People who have been studying together for almost two years say, "I see the atmosphere on the Internet has changed."

In the process of learning, I can feel that my self-image is changing, and it is also changing in the eyes of others, so I think peer tutoring is very important.

I want to continue to deepen my knowledge of peer counseling and apply what I have learned to my daily clinical situations and gatherings.
