[Special Issue] I attended a seminar with a clinical training instructor

I'm Aoi Hashima , an occupational therapist working in Saga Sumai and Fukuoka.

Yesterday, I attended the " Clinical Internship Leadership Seminar " hosted by the Japan Occupational Therapy Association.

To become an occupational therapist, one needs to study at a training school such as a university or vocational school, and take and pass the National Occupational Therapist exam.

When studying at a training school such as a university or vocational school, in addition to on-campus studies, it is necessary to travel to hospitals and facilities and conduct practical training within a specified period of time.

During the practical training, we will gain an in-depth understanding of how to develop practical occupational therapy in collaboration with patients and persons with disabilities.

In the past, if you have more than 5 years of clinical experience after obtaining the national qualification, you can train students to become clinical practice instructors during the internship. We are now in a transition period (currently seniors use the old curriculum, and third-year students use the new curriculum).

Our clinic has completed the clinical training leader's workshop, so we have another trainee this year.

I also completed this course so I can manage clinical training as a supervisor.

It may be hard to believe now, but when I was a student, staying up late was the norm, and I had a lot of papers to write and a lot of assignments to submit.

This system of clinical training has become problematic, and legal arrangements are currently being developed that will require adjustments to training hours within 45 hours per week, either in hospital placements or home-schooling.

Ensuring the best quality of training with limited time and limited documentation depends on the competence of the live instructors in charge of the students.

I believe that putting them through productive hands-on training and developing young people will also have an impact on support systems for various diseases and disabilities.

I believe better education is a way to better recovery support, so when I'm in charge of students, I want to take them seriously.
