Disorders leading to higher brain dysfunction and welfare services by age

I'm Aoi Hashima , an occupational therapist working in Saga Sumai and Fukuoka.

I often blog about the services available after a stroke.

If higher brain dysfunction remains a post-stroke sequelae, there are several services available.

We sometimes receive inquiries about services available when high brain dysfunction is still a sequel to a traffic accident or encephalitis rather than a stroke.

There are some differences in the services available for stroke patients and for those with the sequelae of brain dysfunction after a traffic accident or encephalitis.

This time, I want to write about diseases and welfare services that lead to higher brain dysfunction by age.

Source: About the Nursing Care Insurance System

Stroke is a specific disease under the long-term care insurance system.

No. 13 in the above table is listed as "cerebrovascular disease", but corresponds to stroke.

Long-term care insurance is generally available to people aged 65 and older, but long-term care insurance is available from age 40 in the case of cerebrovascular disease covered by the long-term care insurance system.

Cerebrovascular disease is defined as "all conditions with various cerebral symptoms due to blockage or rupture of blood vessels in the brain," including cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Brain contusions and encephalitis following a traffic accident are not specific conditions under the long-term care insurance system because they are not caused by ruptured or blocked blood vessels in the brain.

Long-term care insurance can only be used after the age of 65 even if there is still a high level of brain dysfunction after a traffic accident etc.
